Topic Explanation

In order to build a society and environment sustainable for future generations, defining perspective in innovation and making own innovation are highly desired. This year we are pleased to invite local and global specialists on the economic society to discuss about stimulation of innovation and innovative thinking in each expertise. Each panelist will introduce their views on the topic, and then will welcome questions or comments from the audience. We hope that this interactive session will enlighten students to prepare themselves for work life ahead.

Takayuki AOKI (Professor of Tokyo Institute of Technology)

 Prof. Aoki received a Dr.Sci from Tokyo Institute of Technology in 1989, has been a professor since 2001 and the deputy director of the Global Scientific Information and Computing Center since 2009. He received the Computational Mechanics Achievement Award from Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME), Achievement Award from Japan Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (JSIAM) Minister Award of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology in Japan and many awards and honors in GPU computing, scientific visualization, and others. He was a leader of the team who got the Gordon Bell Prize in 2011. He was also recognized as a CUDA fellow by NVIDIA in 2012.


Haruyoshi KUMURA (Fellow of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd)

Dr. Haruyoshi Kumura was appointed Fellow in charge of Technology Intelligence of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. in April 2009. He graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Master’s course of Mechanical Engineering in March of 1981 and joined Nissan Motor. After assuming several management positions in Nissan’s Powertrain and Environment Research Laboratory, he became General Manager in the laboratory in 2003. His appointment to Vice President in charge of Nissan Research Center in 2005 was quickly followed by his promotion to Corporate Vice President in 2006. He holds a doctor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Yokohama National University.


Lee WOOLGAR(Senior ICT Policy Officer, Delegation of the European Union to Japan )

Lee Woolgar is Senior ICT Policy Officer in the Delegation of the European Union to Japan. He took a Ph.D. in science, technology and innovation assessment from Manchester Business School, University of Manchester and did postdoctoral work at the Research Centre for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), University of Tokyo looking at Japan's system for university-industry links. He then worked as a researcher in the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP) and became a Lecturer in the Department of Technology Management for Innovation in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tokyo. Between 2005 and 2014 he was also a Visiting Lecturer at the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS). He has been a national innovation policy expert on a number of projects for the European Commission (such as ERAWATCH, Trendchart, METRIS, and EURAXESS), the OECD, amongst others.

Assoc. Prof. Tom Hope

Assoc. Prof. Tom Hope received a Ph.D in Sociology from the University of York in the UK and has been in Japan since 2003. He introduced the Euro-style “Science Cafe” format of public engagement with science and technology in Tokyo. He joined Tokyo Tech in 2009 and works in the international student center.
