Date & Venue

Kuramae Hall, Tokyo Tech. Front

Abstract

The Earth-Life Science Institute was launched December 2012, based on the World Premier International Research Center Initiative Program (WPI). Our main goal is to explore the origin of the Earth and the origin of life as inseparable questions. We also aim to contribute to the globalization of the Tokyo Tech and the reform of a traditional Japanese university system. I will introduce the activities of ELSI that has grown extensively in the last three years. In addition, I will talk about our recent research results related to the origin of water on the Earth. It is likely that a large amount of water was brought to the Earth during its formation but mostly stored in its deep interior. As a consequence, the coexistence of land and ocean provides diverse environments on the Earth, which is essential for the evolution of life and possibly for its origin as well.
